Art Museum, Minsk

The hospitable capital of the Republic of Belarus is full of interesting sights and historical and architectural monuments. They can be attributed to the National Art Museum of Minsk, without which acquaintance with the city will not be complete.

History of the Art Museum of Minsk

The history of the museum began in 1939, when the State Art Gallery was opened in the capital of the BSSR, where works of art collected from mansions, museums of other cities of the republic and other major museums of the USSR were exhibited. Unfortunately, during the Great Patriotic War most of the art of the gallery was taken out and looted. After the war, the gallery management re-occupied the collection. Since 1957, the gallery has been renamed the State Art Museum of the BSSR. Later the museum moved several times, new buildings were built for it. To date, the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus is considered one of the richest in the Eastern European region.

Collection of the National Art Museum, Minsk

The fund of the famous museum has about 30 thousand works of art, making 20 collections. The first is a collection of national (Belarusian) art. The exhibition introduces its visitors to the collection of items of ancient Belarusian art and crafts (icons, crosses, ornaments, objects of everyday life, carvings, jewelry, fabric samples, etc.). Also in the Art Museum in Minsk there is an exposition of the Belarusian art of the 19th and 20th centuries. Unfortunately, works of art of the XIX century are few - no more than 500 units, which is explained by the export of the collection during the war. But the collection of painting, decorative and applied art, graphics and sculpture of Belarus of the XX century is quite extensive - about 11 thousand exhibits.

The collection of world art The National Art Museum of Minsk is represented by works of masters from the East of the XIV-XX centuries, Europe of the XVI-XX centuries and Russia of the XVIII-early XX centuries.
