Botanical Garden

Located in the heart of Sukhum, the garden is one of the most famous in the entire Caucasus. On its territory is collected a collection of plants from around the world, numbering over 5 thousand exhibits. Among them there are even relict specimens, such as the 250-year-old lime tree.

Nature lovers can also visit the local Dendropark, which has over 850 species of different trees collected from different parts of the world. Especially popular is the alley of South American elephant palms. You can find it in the eastern part of Sukhum.

Historical sights of Sukhumi

A large number of historical monuments are located throughout the city and its environs:

  1. Sukhum Fortress - the oldest building in Abkhazia, is located in the center of Sukhum on the beach. It is believed that it was built in the 2nd century AD. Archaeological work is constantly carried out here, although some buildings have already collapsed into the water.
  2. Bridge of the Queen of Tamara or Besletsky Bridge - this building was built during the Middle Ages 5 km from the city across the river Baslu. Historians say that it was created in the 10th century, but it is still well preserved. Near it there are ruins of ancient buildings: a temple and houses, therefore the gorge of the Basly river is popular with tourists.
  3. Bagrat Castle - stands on a mountain in the north-eastern part of Sukhum, at the end of the 10th century it was built as a protective structure. In addition to the walls, the underground tunnel is still well preserved. From the location of the castle offers a magnificent view of the city and its surroundings.
  4. The Great Abkhazian Wall - 5 km from the city center there were majestic ruins, once 160 km of wall protecting the country from invaders from the North Caucasus.

The streets of Sukhum are very beautiful in themselves. Here, even the oldest buildings (on Mira Avenue), the former city school, built in 1863, have been preserved. Especially picturesque are the following places:

Sukhum is a resort town, therefore a large number of boarding houses, tourist bases and hotels are located here. The largest number of them is in such areas as Turbaza, Mayak, Kylasur and Sinop.

Beaches of Sukhumi

Almost all the beaches of this city-resort are urban, that is free and unequipped. These are mainly pebbles, but there are also sandy areas near the Peschany Bereg hotel in the Sinop area. A lot of hotels for their vacationers are separated and ennobled territory for recreation on the beach.
