When to take 17-OH progesterone?

17-OH progesterone is an intermediate product of the interaction of hormones of progesterone and 17-hydroxyprepnenolone, and has the full name of hydroxyprogesterone. The hormone in the human body is produced by the adrenal glands, and in women also by the ovaries, as well as by the placenta in pregnancy. 17-OH progesterone affects the possibility of conception, the normal course of pregnancy and fetal development. In the absence of pregnancy, the hormone level in the woman's body is insignificant and varies considerably depending on the phase of the menstrual cycle. The highest rates are for the period of ovulation, gradually decreasing to the beginning of menstruation.

Analyzes

The blood test for 17-OH progesterone is prescribed for both adult women and children. In the first case, the indication is the suspicion of a tumor of the adrenal glands, infertility, a violation of the menstrual cycle, in the second - the detection of adrenogenital syndrome. From the purpose of analysis depends on the time when taking 17-OH progesterone. As a rule, women are tested for progesterone 17-OH 3-4 days after the onset of menstruation, children - in the morning on an empty stomach.

Analysis results

There are 2 types of variances in the results:

  1. Elevated levels of the hormone indicate possible tumors of the ovaries and adrenal glands. Also, high 17-OH progesterone is the cause of menstrual irregularities and infertility. In children, elevated indicators indicate a possible genetic pathology associated with improper hormone production.
  2. The lowered level of the hormone indicates an insufficient function of the ovaries or the diseases of the adrenal cortex. It is worth noting that low hormone levels significantly reduce the chances of successful fertilization, and therefore require mandatory adjustments by medical products.
