The Portuguese Museum

In the city of Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay there is a small museum dedicated to the period of Portuguese colonization. It is also called the Portuguese Museum (Museo Portugues de Colonia del Sacramento).

What is the museum famous for?

It is located in an ancient building, erected by the Portuguese in 1720. This is one of the oldest buildings in the village. Its facade though looks gloomy, but at the same time its unusual architecture attracts the eyes of tourists. For external walls, unbaked brick and stone were used, and for internal walls, tiles and wood were used. The institution is managed by the Ministry of Culture and Education of the country.

There are 5 rooms in which the interior of the mid-18th century has been fully recreated. The Portuguese Museum houses countless ancient exhibits. They are furniture, household items, clothing, sculptures, ceramics, utensils and other household utensils of that period. On the walls in the institution hang paintings, and the floors are covered with carpets. Such a situation seems to return its visitors in colonial times and gives a complete picture of the history, customs and daily life of local residents.

Even in the Portuguese Museum there is a historical shield, which in former times was located on the main gate of the city and served as a symbol of colonial power. On the territory of the institution there is a hall where visitors can get acquainted with:
