Surfing in Sri Lanka

Many tourists from all over the world, and primarily from the UK, Australia and Europe, rush to Sri Lanka solely for the sake of surfing, that is skating on a special board on the wave. And this is not only due to the well-developed infrastructure of the island. It seems that nature itself contributed to the development of this water sport: beautiful beaches, blown by winds from all sides, magnificent waves and a relief bottom.

Features of surfing in Sri Lanka

It should be mentioned right away that surfers who prefer extreme sports are unlikely to be interested here, since large waves are rare on the coast of the island. But often there are good waves of medium height. By the way, the surfing season in Sri Lanka on different parts of the coast lasts at different times. So, for example, to surf in Sri Lanka in winter is better on the South-West coast. At other times of the year there are simply no waves, and the season of excellent waves continues from November to March. But on the South-East coast for riding on the waves we recommend to go from June to October.

Among the most popular surfing resorts is Hikkaduwa, where there are about a dozen famous surfing spots and camps in Sri Lanka: Kabalana, Mirissa, Midigama, North Jetty, Main Reef, Beach break. In Hikkaduwa it is comfortable both for beginners and intermediate level surfers. A lot of surfers are arriving on the Arugam bay shore, where you can find about 7 surf spots: Okanda, Arugam bay Surfing Beach, Crocodile Rock, Pottuvil and others. Most of the spots are surrounded by inexpensive hotels and hotels, bars and cafes.

There are three surf schools on the coast of the island. Russian-speaking tourists prefer to go to Sri Lanka to surf school Surf Discovery in the village of Weligama. Here, incidentally, is a pretty safe spot for learning beach break - there are no rocks and reefs.
