St. Vladimir's Cathedral in Kiev

The idea of ​​the construction of the temple arose before Metropolitan Philaret Amfiteatrov before the celebration of the 900th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus. The construction of the temple was started by the architect Beretti, but in the erected building cracks formed, and further construction was frozen. The construction of the church was completed in 1882. To decorate the interior of the cathedral attracted many famous artists: Vrubel, Nesterov, Vasnetsov, Pimonenko and many others. In 1896 the cathedral was solemnly consecrated. And during the Soviet Union all the property of the temple was nationalized, and the bells were melted down. The services in the cathedral resumed in the 40s of the XX century. Since 1992 the Vladimir Cathedral in Kiev is the main temple of the Kyiv Patriarchate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

The exterior and interior of the temple were created in the Old Byzantine style: a six-pillared temple, three aspidas, seven domes. The facade of the cathedral is decorated with a beautiful mosaic, and the bronze doors at the main entrance to the cathedral are cast images of Vladimir and Olga, the prince of Kiev and the princess.

The famous Russian artist created portraits of princes who were canonized: A. Bogolyubsky, A. Nevsky, Princess Olga. The Virgin with the Child - the central composition in the altar of the cathedral - also emerged from the brush of Vasnetsov.

The painting of the right nave of the Vladimir church was performed by M. Vrubel. M. Nesterov painted the iconostases of the side naves of the temple. Also, they created the compositions "Christmas", "Theophany" and "Resurrection" imbued with divine power. Many icons of the Vladimir Cathedral in Kiev also belong to Nesterov's brush, for example, the icons of the holy princes Gleb and Boris.

Famous artists Kotarbinsky and Svedomsky created 18 compositions of the cathedral mural. Especially distinguished among them are the full tragedies "The Last Supper", "The Crucifixion" and many others.

To make the iconostasis in the Vladimir Cathedral, a smoky-gray Carrara marble was used. Multicolored marble adorns all the interior decoration of the Cathedral of Vladimir and the mosaic floor. The gilded altar and the iconostasis, the silver church utensils, rich icons give the impression of religious power and at the same time rest.
