St. Rumold's Cathedral


Mechelen is a small town in Belgium , located only 24 km from Brussels . The main decoration of this city is the Great Square. It is here that one of the most famous landmarks of the country is located - St. Rumold's Cathedral.

Architectural style and features

The facade of the arch-cathedral of St. Rumold in Mechelen is designed in the Gothic style. The interior also includes elements of classicism and baroque. The decoration of the central nave is a marble altar, designed in the Baroque style. At its top is a reliquary with the relics of St. Rumold. His figure adorns the top of the altar. Over his creation worked Lucas Feydherbe, who was a pupil of Peter Paul Rubens himself.

Another decoration of the central nave of St. Rumold's Cathedral in Mechelen is the department, which is made in the form of a fallen tree, its leaves, branches and flowers. Along the central nave there are columns with Gothic arches. Each column is adorned with the figure of one of the four evangelists and 12 apostles. In addition, there is an oak department of the XVIII century, which depicts scenes from the life of the holy martyr Rumold.

Getting to St. Rumold's Cathedral is not difficult, as it can be seen from any part of Mechelen. Next to it lies the street Nieuwwerk and Steenweg. Just 120 meters (2 minutes walk) from the cathedral is the Mechelen Schoenmarkt stop, which can be reached by bus route number 1.
