Historical digression
"City of the Cross", which until 1964 was called Stavropol, today is a member of the Samara-Togliatti agglomeration. It is located on the left bank of the Volga River. In the city there are more than 700 thousand people, therefore Togliatti is considered the largest Russian city among those that are not the capitals of the subjects of the Federation.
Initially, the city-fortress in 1737 was laid for the protection of lands from the Kalmyks-settlers and other nomads who regularly make raids. A few decades later, the status of the fortress was lost, and Stavropol turned into a kumisolechebnitsu - a resort that was accessible to many.
In the mid 60-ies of the last century, Stavropol was literally flooded, because in its place appeared Kuibyshev reservoir. The townspeople were moved to the hilly terrain nearby, where Togliatti is today. In the 1970s, the construction of AvtoVAZ, an enterprise that became a symbol of the city, began in Togliatti.
