Parquet varnish

Parquet and parquet board are considered elite floor coverings, and if there is a certain amount of money, each owner chooses exactly them for repair. After all, these coatings, in addition to excellent aesthetic qualities, also have high strength and wear resistance. But to protect against premature wear, ensure high strength and preserve color, wood should be covered with parquet varnish.

Parquet varnish - selection criteria

There are several factors that influence the choice of a varnish:

Each of the existing parquet varnishes has individual characteristics with respect to these factors. Therefore, before you buy and start using a varnish, you need to study its properties:

  1. Parquet varnish on a water basis is suitable for premises that do not experience high loads. It is characterized by an average level of wear resistance and the lowest value of the release of harmful substances. Not the toxicity of the varnish is explained by the fact that its basis is water. For the same reason, water-based varnishes are not used for hygroscopic wood species. Parquet lacquer, water-based, odorless, is recommended for use in residential and people with allergies. Glossy parquet varnish is not desirable to choose on a water basis, because it has a not very expressive gloss.
  2. Polyurethane parquet varnish has a high level of strength and durability. It reliably protects the wood from moisture, and when applied, the continuous film formed is uniformly distributed over the entire surface of the floor and fills any irregularities that are present. Therefore, when using polyurethane varnish, a perfectly flat surface is formed, which is not afraid of wet cleaning. In addition, when choosing a polyurethane varnish, you need to consider that it does not preserve the natural color of the wood.
  3. Acrylic parquet varnish significantly increases the wear resistance of wood. Each additional layer of varnish makes it much stronger. But in doing so, you should consider how much the acrylic parquet lacquer dries. This process can take up to two weeks. And it does not protect wood from moisture.
  4. Alkyd varnishes are characterized by a high level of strength and moisture resistance. Dry these coatings for at least 24 hours. But alkyd-urethane parquet varnish dries no more than 12 hours, thanks to the addition of the urethane.
  5. In addition, one-and two-component parquet varnish can be found on the market. Its components - the base and hardener, are sold in separate containers and mixed immediately before application. Two-component varnishes are much more expensive than single-component varnishes, but they have a higher level of strength.

The choice of gloss varnish commits to create a perfectly flat surface of the parquet floor , because such a coating will make all the shortcomings clearer.

But matte and semi-matt parquet varnish, on the contrary, artificially hide these shortcomings.

The appearance of the decorative coating also depends on the color of the chosen varnish. So the application of white parquet varnish on the floor surface gives the wood a light, translucent shades.

A light yellow varnish will make the natural color of the wood more saturated. Dark yellow or light brown varnish will give the coating a reddish shade. A dark parquet varnish is able to radically change the natural color of wood.
