National Museum (Montenegro)


Montenegrins cherish and cherish their customs and history. The city of Cetinje is the cradle of national identity and culture, it is here that the National Museum of the country (Narodni muzej Crne Gore or National Museum of Montenegro) is located.

The institution is in a former government house. Previously, this building was the largest in Montenegro, and designed by its famous Italian architect Corradini. In 1893 it was decided to create the National Museum of Montenegro . In 1896 its official opening took place.

The collection of the museum collection covers the period from the mid-fifteenth century to the present. The institution presents rich and interesting exhibits, for example, various documents, art paintings, various ethnographic items, antique furniture, military exposition (especially many Turkish orders, banners and weapons), archaeological finds, etc.

In the library there are about 10 thousand books, among which there are rare editions - 2 church Oktoiha. Here is the largest collection of Turkish banners in Europe, which has 44 items.

What is a part of the National Museum?

This institution is considered a complex institution that combines 5 museums of different themes:

  1. Art Museum. It was originally called the Picture Gallery and was opened in 1850. Here you can get acquainted with modern and Yugoslav collections of icons, sculptures, stone frescoes, canvases, etc. In total, the museum has about 3000 exhibits. In a separate hall of the institution there is a memorial collection consisting of works by Picasso, Dali, Chagall, Renoir and other artists. Their works are executed in different directions and styles (impressionism, realism, romanticism). The most valuable specimen is the miraculous icon of the Philharmonic Virgin.
  2. Historical Museum. Visitors here will be able to get acquainted with pre-Slavic and medieval periods, as well as with other stages (political, cultural, military) of the formation of Montenegro. The department was opened in 1898 and is considered the youngest of the museum complex. The building has an area of ​​1400 square meters. m, which houses 140 storefronts with exhibits, photographs, diagrams, maps and other archival documents. Also here you can see ancient coins, copper and pottery, hand-written books, murals, ornaments, etc.
  3. Ethnographical museum. In the institution you can get acquainted with the collection of textiles, weaving looms, weapons, clothing, food, musical instruments and an exposition consisting of national works of art. The museum tells about the life and entertainment of local residents several hundred years ago.
  4. The Museum of King Nikola. It was founded in the former residence of the last monarch of Montenegro in 1926. Here is a unique collection of personal royal things: weapons, clothing, emblems, books, paintings, ornaments, household utensils and household items. Exhibits were collected bit by bit, and today several museum rooms acquaint visitors with the life of rulers.
  5. House of Petr Petrovich Nyogosh. He is in the former residence of the monarch, called Billiards. This memorial museum keeps the memory of the ruler of Montenegro. Here, the interior of the nineteenth century was reconstructed, in which the family of Negosh lived. The walls are decorated with portraits of celebrities of that time, and on the shelves are stored books.

How to get there?

From the center of Cetinje to the museum you can walk on the streets of Grahovska / P1 and Novice Cerovića or Ivanbegova. The distance is 500 m.
