Narryna Museum

Surprisingly original museum "Narryna" is one of the places that must be visited, a highlight of the Tasmanian city, a corner of history, culture and creativity.

History of the museum

This ancient mansion was built in 1836 by the English sea captain Andrew Hag, who bought the land from Robert Knopewood, who was the first priest in Tasmania. The first decades after the construction of the house passed from hand to hand, lived here and the mayor of the city, and many eminent Tasmanians. In 1855, at the insistence of the Tasmanian Historical Society, the people's museum was opened in the mansion, placing in it the richest collection of Australian household items of the 19th century. In fact, Narryna became the first museum of colonial heritage in the country.

What's interesting in the museum?

The museum "Narryna" is truly a treasury of the city of Hobart and deserves undoubtedly close attention. This is one of the best expositions, telling about the history of Australia of the XIX century. And in Narryna Heritage Museum exhibitions of ancient national costumes are often held.

The museum is built in Georgian style with sandstone and brick architecture. Around the building is a courtyard, in which there is an old granary. An interesting feature is the floors in the house. The part that was intended for the owner, laid out New Zealand agate, in the other half, where the servants were supposed to live, the floors are made of a cheaper Tasman pine. Among the exhibits of the museum Narryna can be found as objects of everyday life, as well as masterpieces of art.

Unfortunately, the situation in the house has been significantly lost, since Captain Haig, when he left this house, sold most of his property. However, the furniture of that time, objects from porcelain, silver, works of art and books were preserved. For example, a great value is a tea table made of rosewood. Such items were used to store and sort elite types of tea, in the XIX century it was a drink of the elite, and tea was usually kept under lock and key. Pay attention also to the bureau of the XVII century and the beaded fireplace screen.

On the first floor of the building there are a kitchen, a living room, a dining room, an office and a breakfast room. In the kitchen there is an interesting collection of figures made of Tasmanian pine, as well as a large number of porcelain dishes. Further, there is a slight climb, then between the first and second floor you can see a children's bedroom and a room for a nanny, characterized by low ceilings. The children's room is filled with toys of that time, among which there are a lot of dolls, books, furniture. The second floor is allocated for the bedrooms, the most luxurious of which is, of course, the master bedroom.

Having finished examining the interior of the museum, we recommend that you look inside the courtyard to see the barn, which today also hosts exhibitions and stores part of the exhibits. Noteworthy are the garden around the museum and the backyard with a coach house, smithy and other outbuildings.
