Mogren Fortress


Budva is not only a popular resort in Montenegro . In the vicinity of this city there are many attractions that have played an important role in the history of the country. Among them is the ancient fortress Mogren, founded during the reign of Austria-Hungary.

History of the fortress Mogren

This fortification was built in 1860 by order of the Austrian-Hungarian authorities, which was primarily due to its strategically important position. Thanks to the fact that the fortress Mogren was built on the shore of Budva Bay, the army managed to control all approaches to the shore from the land and sea.

During the Second World War, the fortress and its tunnels were used as a depot for ammunition and weapons. At the same time, the process of its destruction was launched, which was later aggravated by an earthquake and fires. So now the fort is just a ruin.

Architectural style of the fortress Mogren

In former times this defensive structure was a rectangular fortress with high powerful walls and towers. It was divided into two parts. The first part was different in that its loopholes were directed to the Budva Riviera. The second part of the fortress Mogren was used mainly during the Second World War and was equipped with artillery sectors directed towards the Adriatic Sea.

Use of Mogren Fortress

The city administration estimated that the use of the fort could bring $ 37500 to the budget. However, most of the deputies of the Assembly voted against this project. In their opinion, the use of Mogren fortress for commercial purposes will negatively affect its authenticity and historical appearance.

At present, the fort remains only ruins, overgrown with dense vegetation. Occasionally here you can meet birds, snakes and small animals. Despite the fact that the way to it is rather complicated, tourists do not frighten it at all. After all, from the top of Mogren fortress, you can see fascinating views of Budva itself, the beaches, the island of St. Nicholas and the Adriatic coast. How to get to the fortress Mogren?

To see this ancient fortification, you need to go to the south-eastern part of Montenegro on the Adriatic coast. From the fortress Mogren to the center of Budva is only 2 km, so it will not be difficult to find it. Here you can take a taxi or rent a car . If you move along the route number 2, then the road will take only 7 minutes. Many tourists prefer to get to the fort on foot along the Yadran highway or directly from Mogren beach . In this case, the whole journey takes about 30 minutes.
