Marivent Castle

Marivent Palace (Palacio de Marivent) - the place where the royal family of Spain spends part of their summer vacation (usually the monarchs are resting here in August), and sometimes Easter holidays. It is located near the resort of Illetas and very close to Palma .

Sometimes the palace is also called a castle. As a residence, the palace was chosen back in the 70s of last century, the last King of Spain, Juan Carlos I - at that time he was still a prince.

History of construction

The Marivent Castle is also known as the palace of Saridakis. John Saradakis, a painter and collector of Greek-Egyptian origin, moved to Mallorca in 1923. On his behalf, the mayor of Palma, Guillaume Fortez Pin, designed a palace in a style combining traditional Majorcan and Italian motifs. The building was completed in 1925, and the palace became a home not only for the family of Saridakis, but also for his collection of paintings, which includes more than 100 paintings, libraries in more than 2000 volumes and a collection of antiques, amounting to about 1,300 exhibits.

Marivent Castle - summer residence of the Spanish crown

In 1963, Saridakis died, and two years later his widow gave a mansion to the government so that he became a museum dedicated to the collections of Saridakis. In 1975, the mansion was turned into a summer royal residence and renamed: Marivent means "the palace of the sea and the wind". In 1978 the family of Saridakis challenged the decision to turn the palace into a royal residence, as it was transferred to the government on other terms. The family demanded the return of collections, and after a trial lasting about 10 years, the collections were returned to the heirs of Saridakis.

For the holidays of the royal family, an annual sailing regatta for the King's Cup is timed, in which members of other royal families of Europe take part.

Now you can admire the gardens of the palace near!
