Laterna Magica

What does Prague associate with an ordinary person? First and foremost, it is a romantic image of the city, in which its unique architecture, paved streets and scattered street light were combined. Gas lanterns and a lamplighter, clad in a dark cloak and tall cylinder, are an invariable symbol of the capital of the Czech Republic . And this fact finds its reflection in a wide variety of things and phenomena. For example, unique in its way is the Laterna Magika Theater in Prague, whose name translates as a "magic lantern".

What does Laterna Magica enchant tourists?

The first thing that catches your eye is the theater building. It is located on one of the main avenues of Prague - Narodni Trzhida, and stands out strikingly against the usual Baroque architecture. The building has the form of a giant mirror cube. What is characteristic, erected it purposefully, wishing to solve two birds with one stone: take an empty square at the National Theater , without diluting the reigning atmosphere with supermarkets or hotels, and give life to a new trend of theatrical life.

Why the mirror cube? Before the architect was the primary task of creating a soundproofing of the interior from noise emanating from the avenue. With the same purpose in the decoration of the building used stone slabs of Cuban marble and large plates of thermo glass.

Features of the theater

The settings here take place using the projections of various images on the scene screen. In general, they can be described as a kind of combination of photographs, drawings, dances, actors and special equipment, which provides behind-the-scenes space for creating various effects. What is characteristic, on the stage of this theater, sometimes presentations are given in which the essence and events are conveyed by action and picture, and not words. Such shows are frustrated, since they allow you to easily overcome the language barrier.

The name of Laterna Magika was received in honor of the popular in 1958 production, which was called "The Magic Lantern".

Today, performances in the theater are still accompanied by modern means of visualization. Laterna Magica is a structural part of the National Theater.

You can get there by tram Nos. 2, 9, 11, 14, 18, 22, 23, 41, 93, 97, 98, 99 to the National Theater stop. The nearest metro station is Národní třída.
