The decision to found the museum of Kisumu was made in 1975. The construction took 5 years, and already on April 7, 1980 the museum was put into operation.
Features of the museum
The Kisumu Museum is not just an entertainment center, it's an educational institution that introduces visitors to the way of life of the indigenous population. Great importance is also given to acquaintance with the biodiversity of Lake Victoria , which is considered the second largest freshwater lake in the world. Here you can see the exhibits telling about the culture of the peoples living on the territory of the Western Rift Valley and Nyanza province.
Exhibits of the museum
Currently, the following pavilions are open in the Kisumu Museum:
- A freshwater aquarium in which fish from Lake Malawi are found;
- bay with crocodiles;
- a reptile park inhabited by poisonous snakes like spitting cobras and African vipers;
- park of turtles;
- The exposition of Berg-gi-Dala, which is a traditional manor house of the people of Luo.
In the pavilions of the museum of Kisumu you can see a lot of stuffed animals that have been living in Kenya for centuries. Special attention should be paid to the exposition, which depicts the moment of the lioness's attack on the wildebeest. In addition, the museum displays Kisumu items that were made by local artisans. Among them, agricultural implements, jewelry, weapons and kitchen utensils. In one of the pavilions of the museum of Kisumu you can see a fragment of the rock, which depicts rock carvings.
The main attraction of the museum Kisumu is the pavilion of Ber-gi-Dala, located directly under the open sky. It is a traditional manor house of the Luo people, recreated in full size. It belongs to a fictional resident of the Luo tribe. On the territory of the estate are three houses, for each of his three wives, as well as the house of the eldest son. In addition, there is a granary and a cattle pond on the territory of the facility. This exhibition was recreated with the support of the UNESCO Foundation, which provided an excellent opportunity for every visitor to get acquainted with the life of the people of Luo.
How to get there?
The Kisumu Museum is located in the capital of Nyanza province - Kisumu. Through the city passes a route connecting it with the cities of Kericho and Nairobi . The museum is located almost at the intersection of the Nerobi Road and Aga Khan Road. You can reach it by bus or matatu (mini bus). Just remember that urban transport often violates the schedule, so the trip should be planned in advance.
