The second largest city of Lithuania - Kaunas has a long history. Founded in 1280, the city was in the Middle Ages an important outpost of the Teutonic Order. Forts of Kaunas

By 1890 Kaunas (at that time it was called Kovno) was fortified, surrounded by eight forts, and by the beginning of the First World War the construction of the ninth fort was completed. Since 1924 there was a city prison here, in 1940 - 1941 the NKVD placed political prisoners before being sent to the Gulag. During the Second World War, in the Ninth Fort of Kaunas, there was a concentration camp where mass shootings of people took place. In terrible years it was called "the fort of death". Since 1958, the fort is a museum that represents materials about the country's genocide and the Holocaust.
