International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is celebrated around the world on October 17. On this day, many meetings are held in memory of the victims who perished from poverty, as well as various advocacy activities aimed at drawing attention to the problems of people living below the poverty line.

The history of the day to combat poverty

The World Day of Struggle against Poverty dates from October 17, 1987. On this day in Paris, on the Trocadéro Square, a memorial meeting was held for the first time aimed at drawing public attention to how much people in the world live in poverty, how many victims are starved and other poverty problems every year. Poverty was declared a violation of human rights , and a memorial stone was opened in memory of the meeting and the rally.

Later similar monuments began to appear in different countries, as a reminder that poverty is still not defeated on Earth and many people need help. One of these stones is set in New York in the garden near the UN Headquarters and near this stone a solemn ceremony dedicated to the Day of Struggle for the Eradication of Poverty is held annually.

On December 22, 1992, October 17 was officially declared the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty by the UN General Assembly.

Activities of the International Day Against Poverty

On this day, various events and rallies are held, aimed at drawing attention to the problems of the poor and needy. And much attention is paid to the participation of the poorest people themselves in these events, because without the collective efforts of the whole society, including the poor themselves, it will be impossible to solve the problem finally and overcome poverty. Every year this day has its own theme, for example: "From poverty to decent work: bridging the gap" or "Children and families are against poverty", on which the direction of action is determined and an action plan is drawn up.
