Norway is full of interesting sights , among which the honorary place is occupied by prehistoric glaciers. Some of them are so large that their territory is called a national park . Others simply conquer with their beauty. Each of them was formed over the centuries and today is unique.

The largest glaciers in Norway

There are several dozens of glaciers in the country. Among them there are both small and large, which even became a place for winter recreation . These are glaciers:

  1. Jostedalsbreen is one of the largest and most picturesque glaciers in Europe. It is in the south-west of Norway and belongs to the county of Westland. Its area is more than 1230 square meters. km. In 1991, the glacier was awarded the status of the National Park of Norway. Tourists are invited to go by one of the many routes. The safest and most interesting routes are designed for three days.
  2. Brixdal . It is the sleeve of the large Jostedalsbreen glacier. In 1890, a road was laid to it, thanks to which annually this natural object is visited by more than 300 000 tourists. The Brixdal Glacier belongs to the national park of the same name in Norway.
  3. Nigardsbreen . This is another sleeve of Jostedalsbreen, but it is positioned as an independent tourist attraction in Norway . It is considered to be the most accessible for tourists: even 5-year-old children come here.
  4. Folgefonna . This is the third largest glacier in Norway. It organizes a summer ski resort . Here you can ski or sunbathe under the sun. It is this particular feature of Folgefonna that has become known among tourists from all over the world.
  5. Svartisen . It is part of the national Norwegian park Saltfjellé-Svartisen. It is divided into two glaciers - the Western and the Eastern.   6. Tustigbreen . There is also a summer ski resort where you can ski right in your T-shirt and shorts, and also to sunbathe under the warm sun. Glaciers of Spitsbergen

If you look at the map of Norway, you can see that many glaciers are located near the huge Spitsbergen archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. The area of ​​the island is more than 61 thousand square meters. km. Most of the archipelago is the glaciers, of which there are 16. Of these, the most famous are:

  1. Ostfonna . It is the largest of Svalbard glaciers. Its area is just huge - 8,412 square meters. km, and as the ice cap of the planet it takes the third place after Antarctica and Greenland .
  2. Monacobrine . This is the smallest glacier of the archipelago. They have an area of ​​408 square meters. km. Monacobrine is located in the west of Spitsbergen. It was named after one of the princes of Monaco.
  3. Lomonosovfonna . Surprisingly, among the fifteen glaciers of Spitsbergen there is one that bears the name of the Russian scientist Mikhail Lomonosov. It has an area of ​​800 square meters. km and is located in the center of the island. Tourists visit this place very rarely.
