Corner shelf for icons by own hands

In the Orthodox tradition, it is customary to have at least one icon at home. And often they are much more and for their storage a special place is necessary. Church traditions are recommended to hang icons on the eastern wall of the house or equip, so-called, "red corner" - the corner, also oriented to the east. To install such a reduced copy of the church iconostasis, a special shelf is usually needed.

Difficulty in making shelves

There are no strict rules and requirements for arranging shelves for the red corner, so you can safely try to make a corner wall shelf for icons with your own hands. However, the difficulty may arise in the fact that such shelves are usually decorated with intricate carvings, delicate balusters. But without them you can completely get by or buy ready-made parts from wood carvers. We will talk about how to make the simplest shelf for icons with your own hands and the item that shows cutting out an ornament on a tree can be completely missed.

Making a wooden shelf for icons

Of course, for the manufacture of such a shelf, it is better to take wooden planed boards, since the array of wood looks much more noble than, for example, chipboard. Moreover, our regiment is one-tier, which means it is light enough, so it makes no sense to further ease it.

1. Cut out the main parts of the shelf: from the board you need to cut out the corner, and also the front bar - the cornice.
2. If experience allows, it is possible to beautifully cut out the cornice of the shelf along the shape contour, however, you can leave it in the original version.
3. The connection of the shelf and the cornice takes place on the dowels, first you need to try on, so this operation takes place without additional use of glue - dry. For this purpose, small, non-perforating depressions are drilled into the workpieces of the shelf and eaves, where a dowel is inserted - a wooden cylindrical rod.
4. The workpieces are ground and fronted, the edges of the cornice are milled.
5. The cornice is decorated with carving with the necessary skills.
6. The product is assembled, fastened with dowels and glue for greater strength. After that, 4 hinges for fastening to the wall are screwed.

A ready-made shelf can be painted or varnished for a longer service. Then it only needs to be fixed on the wall and placed on it icons.
