City Museum of Modern Art

The City Museum of Modern Art in Ghent (Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst or abbreviated SMAK) is one of those places in the city that you need to visit. This is the first modern art museum in the whole of Belgium . Let's talk more about it.

What interesting things can you see?

In the external appearance of the building, I would like to mention the sculpture by Jan Fabre entitled "The Man Who Measures the Clouds", involuntarily hinting that the exhibition will focus on modern and relevant in our time things and problems.

Inside the museum you have the opportunity to see and appreciate both the permanent exhibition and temporary portable exhibitions. The main collection includes works of art created after 1945 and illustrating the development of culture and art, from the mid-20th century to the present. Here you will see the creations of famous masters, among them Luke Teymans, Ilya Kabakov, Karel Appel, Francis Bacon, Andy Warhol. Among the most striking exhibits of the museum are the works of the German artist Josef Boise and ethnic motifs in the works of the art collective "Cobra". Be sure to visit the hall of Maurice Maeterlinck, who is a Nobel Prize laureate in literature and born in Ghent .

Temporary exhibitions are, perhaps, no less significant for the SMAK museum. However, it should be noted that you will hardly see art paintings and sculptures here, but there is a wide variety of various installations available. And in general, temporary expositions in SMAK are sometimes provocative, shocking unprepared visitors.

The city museum of contemporary art in Ghent is constantly developing, accepting new exhibits, organizing exhibitions and meetings of artists performing here.

How to get there?

This museum you will find in the immediate vicinity of the Citadel Park, in the Flower Show Hall, where the gambling house used to be.

To get to the museum, you need to use the city buses of routes No. 70-73 (exit at the Ledeganckstraat stop) or routes No. 5, 55, 58 (stop for access to them - Heuvelpoort).
