Museum of Design

Most often, when traveling in Belgium , tourists choose routes through Brussels or Bruges , naively believing that in other cities either there is nothing to see or everything has long been seen. However, do not neglect the opportunity to enjoy the special atmosphere that reigns in Ghent thanks to the channels that cross the center. In addition, there is a unique museum, a visit which is a must-see for any tourist is the Museum of Design.

Exposition of the museum

Conventionally, the collection of the museum is divided into "old" and "new". So, the sightseeing tour starts from the moment you enter the mansion room and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the XVIII century. The floor is decorated with antique parquet, the walls are decorated with marvelous frescoes, portraits of famous personalities and silk panels, and elegant crystal chandeliers delight the eye. Particular attention is paid to the dining room, which is adorned with the carved wooden chandelier of Allert's authorship. It depicts a kind of tree of life with an allegorical drawing of four continents (at that time the existence of Australia and Antarctica did not yet know). In addition, it is worth to pay attention to the collection of antique products from porcelain of the XVII century.

The museum has a huge number of art-nouveau artifacts. What is characteristic, the collection reflects both directions of this style: as the initial one, in which the smooth lines and floral motives abound, and more constructivist. Works are presented here both world-class creators and Belgian masters: Paul Ankara, Gustave Serjure-Bovi, Victor Horta and others. The good news for many connoisseurs was the fact that in 2012 the Design Museum in Ghent became one of the participants in the Partage Plus project, whose goal was to digitize works of art in the Art Nouveau style, and now most of the exhibits can be viewed in a large format directly on the site museum.

No less valuable is the collection of works in the Art Deco style, which were created in the period between the two wars. Here you can see the creations of such masters as Le Corbusier, Maurice Marino, Jacques-Emile Roulmann, Albert Van Huffel, Gabriel Argy-Russo, Chris Lebyo and others. Among the exhibits, interest from visitors is caused by furniture made of ceramics and glass. The most interesting exhibits are exhibited in the halls with special lighting and light music, which only adds bright colors and impressions from viewing the collection.

In addition to permanent exhibitions, temporary exhibitions of young Belgian masters are regularly held at the Design Museum in Ghent, as well as various master classes for different age groups.
