What to see in the Cathedral of Antwerp Our Lady?

This temple is a cultural gem of the city, a museum filled with valuable masterpieces. This is a real monument of the Middle Ages. Its tower, almost 124 meters high, can be seen from anywhere in Antwerp . The Cathedral is the tallest building in the city. Everyone who has seen it even from the corner of his eye instantly agrees that this is the true embodiment of the architecture of incredible beauty. It is located in a small square, opposite the library.

It is worth noting that the first stone of the cathedral of Antwerp Our Lady was laid in the far 14th century, in 1352. And in 1559 the church turned into a powerful cathedral. Overall design attractions are attributed to the architect Jean Appelmans (Jean Appelmans) also known as Jean Amel de Boulogne (Jean Amel de Boulogne). Choruses and nave were added in the period from 1352 to 1411. Separately, I want to mention a tall tower, the construction of which was completed in 1518. Of the two planned towers, only the southern one was created. By the way, the octagonal part of the tower was designed by Herman de Wagemakere. Inside it is a carillon, a special musical instrument with 47 bells.

As for the interior, the wide central nave is framed by three aisles. This creates a huge internal space with 48 columns in each pass. In 1566 and early 1581 the interior of the building was partially destroyed by the Calvinists. And in the 18th century the French threatened to completely demolish the cultural heritage of Antwerp. Fortunately, they could not do it, but during the French occupation, most of the interior was still sold.
