Absurdity in religion, psychology and philosophy

Only with a superficial examination can we call our world harmonious and orderly. In fact, in it, in large numbers, there is absurdity and chaos. Philosophers of different times reflected on this and came to interesting and unusual conclusions.

What does absurdity mean?

The word absurdity comes from the lat. absurdus, "discordant, ridiculous". He is used in a situation where they want to show the contradictoriness of the statement or what is happening. By giving interpretations of what absurd and absurd mean, some philosophers tend toward such meaning as nonsense. This approach is incorrect, because under nonsense, it is more correct to understand statements that do not carry a semantic load: "Windows, days stood." Absurdity is a statement that carries a thought in itself, but it is incorrect, contradictory: "My father never had children."

The method of absurdity is effectively applied in culture, where it can acquire additional meanings. With the help of absurdity the writer can make the reader think differently, and the musician lead to a new understanding of music. In everyday life, the word absurdity can have the meaning of absurdity, nonsense, extremes, limits, uniqueness, transcendence of thinking, lies, deception.

Philosophy of the Absurd

Philosophy of the absurd appeared in the middle of the 19th century. Its founder is the Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard. Absurdity in philosophy is the assertion of the meaninglessness of human existence. Thoughts about the absurdity of life were inspired by social problems, revolutions and wars. Absurdism was represented in the works of Camus, Nietzsche, Dostoevsky, Berdyaev.

Philosophy of the absurd was based on the fact that man can not find the meaning of life. All the searches led to two conclusions:

Psychology of the absurd

From the point of view of psychology, the complete absurdity are those subjects, events, thoughts that are unusual for us, do not fit into our stereotypical understanding. Absurdity is used by psychological schools for such purposes:

Absurdity of Christianity

Talk about absurdities in Christianity is possible only on condition of a superficial study of this issue. At first glance, one can find not one absurdity in the Bible, but whole complexes of strange and contradictory facts. However, the Bible has never been a simple and accessible book. Biblical absurdities include such moments:

  1. In the Old Testament it is said that "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth", and in the New - Christ claims that we must love our enemies and substitute the second cheek.
  2. The story of Jonah, who was eaten by a whale. The prophet stayed in the body of the whale for three days, after which the whale spat him out into the air.
  3. God gives the commandment "Thou shalt not kill," but at the same time gives orders to the Jews to exterminate neighboring pagan tribes and peoples.

Absurd religions

Although religion concerns personal deep experiences and is associated with belief in God, even absurdity has penetrated into this sphere. The most absurd religions are a strange mixture of beliefs, cults and fantasies:

  1. The Church of Subgenius united belief in UFO, pop culture and a number of religions.
  2. Movement of Prince Philip. Supporters of this religion consider the Duke of Edinburgh as a divine person.
  3. Church of euthanasia. Followers of this American movement preach suicide, abortion, cannibalism and sodomy.

The most absurd laws in the world

In the world there are many laws, the adequacy of which can be called into question. Some of them are absurd only at first glance, but for their writing there were real reasons. Others are obsolete, but they were not excluded from the list of laws. In the third group fall laws, the logical explanation of which is difficult to find. The most absurd laws can be found in such countries:

  1. In Canada, in the province of Novaya Scotia, it is impossible to water lawns after the rain, and in the province of Quebec a ban on the sale of yellow margarine.
  2. The policemen of South Korea were obliged to report how many bribes they received for the shift.
  3. In Denmark, prison escapes are allowed.
  4. In the city of Baltimore, Maryland, it is illegal to go to the theater with a company of lions.
  5. In the city of St. Louis, Missouri, it's best not to sit on the pavement with a pail of beer. There, rescuers can not help a woman if she is naked.
  6. In the state of Nebraska, it is forbidden to catch whales. Interestingly, the state has no access to the sea or the ocean. In the same state it is forbidden to sell holes from a bagel.
  7. In Andorra, the profession of a lawyer fell under the ban.
  8. In Singapore, you can not walk without clothes, even in your own home.
  9. Alabama will be punished for driving a car with blindfolds.
