World Day of the Left-handers

About seven percent of the population of our world is left-handed. Now they are calmly treating them at school or at work, but there were times when such people were considered defective and strongly oppressed, not allowing them to live peacefully. It is not surprising that the left-handers began to unite and organize real protests. Over time, this led to the recognition of this problem at the world level and the emergence of an international day of left-handed people.

Many great people held a pen or pencil in their left hand. The great conqueror Napoleon, the politician Churchill, composer Mozart and many other talented people was left-handed. Many who studied in Soviet schools remember how they forced children who tried to write with their left hand to be retrained. Angry teachers even beat them with a ruler on their fingers. But these are flowers. In the Middle Ages, there were beliefs that such people are associated with the devil. Why do people share on righties and lefties? Some experts call excess doses of testosterone, which the child receives from the mother, others are accused of heredity in everything. But the trauma of the right hand obtained in childhood can also lead to the fact that a person is gradually retrained to the left hand.

Once, the left-handers' oppression poured into a mass protest. In 1980, the unfair dismissal of the American police officer Franklin Wybourne resulted in real demonstrations of protest. The guy tried to wear a holster on the left, which was strictly forbidden by the charter. And on August 13, 1992, the International Day of Left-handers was celebrated for the first time. The initiators of this idea were the British, who established there their official club. The first Day of Left-handed activists noted that they took to the streets with posters on which all their demands were written. They were supported by many public figures, including many left-handed people.

Although there are no such prejudices now, but in everyday life left-handers experience many inconveniences. Almost all the handles on the doors are installed in such a way that it is convenient to use them only for right-handers. The same can be said about most household appliances - refrigerators, dishwashers and washing machines , in which the buttons are located more for the convenience of right-handers. They have to strain to use them. Five hundred million people are uncomfortable. Unnatural movements cause nervous stress in some people. There is a lot of equipment to use such people extremely inconveniently. Such nuances can lead even to injuries in the workplace. Left-handers day in England was invented to open the eyes of other people to all these problems. Now everything began to move slowly from the dead point. They began to produce scissors, mice for the computer. Handles and other devices that are suitable for lefties. But while these products are still much more expensive than their usual counterparts.

Is it difficult to be left-handed?

The main thing is that in childhood the left-handers do not experience ridicule or discrimination. Categorically not recommended to try to retrain children, which can hurt their psyche. Explain to the child that he is the same as all his peers and do not need to be shy. You can give them an example of what successes have been achieved by many famous lefties in life. After all, many sports coaches even dream of having such a person in their team. All this is due to the fact that other people are uncomfortable against them boxing or playing. Leo Tolstoy, Chaplin and Leonardo da Vinci and many other geniuses were also left-handed. Some scientists attribute this to the fact that they have better developed the right hemisphere of the brain.

On World Left-hander Day, activists are trying to attract other people to understand the problems that almost 10 percent of the world's people face. Members of the British club call on other people to try using only the left hand for one day: writing, eating, cutting vegetables, using tools, playing sports games or playing musical instruments. Maybe it will help them understand the problems of lefties. Already in some countries there are shops where they began to sell household items and tools that are adapted for left-handed people. So, the problem has shifted from the place, and in time everything will change for the better.
