Surely we all know the classic look of jeans: high fit , straight leggings and five pockets: one on each side in front and behind and one more small pocket protruding over the right front pocket. But what is needed for this small pocket on jeans, know not all.
Why a small pocket on your jeans?
For the first time, the fifth pocket on jeans appeared in the model Levi's 501 XX almost 150 years ago, in 1873. By the way, then it was not the fifth, but the fourth pocket, because in the classical jeans of that time there was only one pocket behind, the second appeared later.
There are three main versions, why Levi's designers have added this tiny pocket in front. The most probable of them - it was intended for wearing pocket watches on a chain, which at that time were much more common than now. On the model of jeans of those times, this little pocket was somewhat larger than we used to see it now, and the clock would fit in it.
The second version of the appearance of this pocket is as follows: since the jeans were then purely work clothes, it was tuned to jeans for the convenience of workers. They could store in it various small things that are easy to lose. So, gold diggers could put small nuggets there, and carpenters, for example, carnations.
Finally, the version is also popular that the pocket was intended for wearing Zippo lighters, which at that time was used by most cowboys, whose main clothing was jeans. This version explains even the reduction in the size of the pocket with time. So, popular lighters Zippo after a while have been superseded by lighters Cricket which perfectly fit in a pocket of the modern size.
