What are mastiffs?

Mastiff is, perhaps, the largest and most massive dogs of our time. In Latin, the name of the breed means "dog-horse", and it is unlikely that you will think up a characterization. Mastiffs come in several types, which ones, we learn in this article.

Tibetan mastiff

A real Tibetan mastiff is a rare phenomenon, but it is from these that all the current Molossoid type dogs are born. This breed is very ancient, and by name it is clear that it originally appeared in Tibet, where there is a lot of snow and cold days. The fur coat of the dog reliably protected and protected it from any bad weather.

And if, from the very beginning, thanks to the isolation of Tibet, it was possible to preserve the thoroughbredness of the mastiffs, then over time they mingled with the western breeds. Only high in the mountains were true representatives of Tibetan dogs.

Tibetan mastiff is a heavy, large, powerful dog with strong muscles, excellent health, able to live 16 years or more. Excellent coping with watchdog functions, while it has a balanced nature and affectionate disposition. Very attached to the owner.

Brazilian Mastiff

Representatives of this breed are more aggressive from nature. At home, they are used as watchdogs and assistants during the hunt for jaguars. Dogs are very distrustful of strangers - this is inherent in them since birth. In this regard, it is undesirable to start her in an apartment, especially if you are often visited by guests.

But in the courtyard of a private house, the Brazilian mastiff feels confident and does not show signs of unnecessary aggression. The size of the dog is quite impressive, but it does not prevent it from being mobile and active. Very attached to the family in which he lives.

Spanish mastiff

Dogs of the Spanish mastiff breed seem at first sight too huge and not suitable for keeping in a family with children. However, the first impression is deceptive, in fact, they are very affectionate and faithful, never offend the creatures weaker than themselves, unless they see an enemy in them for themselves or the owners.

Initially, this breed was bred as shepherd dogs, but also with watchdog functions the Spanish mastiffs cope fine. It is necessary only from the very beginning to train them and teach obedience so that they will not later face problems of discipline.

English mastiff

Representatives of the English Mastiff breed are incredibly large and strong dogs, one of the largest dogs in the world. They combine in their nature formidable watchful qualities and loyalty and affection towards the master.

If you want to have such a dog, you should live in a country house and be ready for long leisurely walks, long training and abundant food intake by your pet.
