Independence Day of Ukraine is a national holiday of the country, which is celebrated year after year not only in Ukraine, but also supported and paid tribute to freedom fighters in Russia and England. The first time the Independence Day of Ukraine celebrated on July 16, 1991 - it was the anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the country. Why now this day has become one of the main holidays of August ? After the adoption of the Act of the Proclamation of Independence of Ukraine in August 1991, disputes arose: what day to celebrate the Independence Day of Ukraine. As a result, in February 1992, the Verkhovna Rada decided that the official date for the celebration of the Independence Day of Ukraine will be August 24.
Celebrating the Independence Day of Ukraine
Ukraine's Independence Day is celebrated in every city of the country. Many cities, for example, Kiev, Odessa, Sevastopol, Lviv, Kharkiv, Uzhgorod and others are preparing special holiday entertainment programs that will delight residents throughout the day.
In 2013, Ukraine will celebrate its 22nd Independence Day. Kiev, as the capital of the country, organizes grandiose festivities, which are customary to be held on Khreshchatyk, Sofia Square and Maydan Nezalezhnosti. Traditionally, Ukraine's Independence Day is celebrated from early morning until late at night. The beginning of the holiday is marked by the ceremonial laying of wreaths and bouquets to the memorials of national heroes. On Maydan Nezalezhnosti, throughout the day performers perform: until evening folklore performances of city residents are encouraged by teams from different parts of Ukraine, and later a concert with pop stars takes place on stage.
Observing the tradition of celebrating the Independence Day of Ukraine, the All-Ukrainian parade of embroideries is planned on Khreshchatyk. Representatives from all corners of Ukraine in their national costumes will be marched by a procession that will begin on the Independence Square and end on the Singing Field.

Traditions of the Independence Day of Ukraine
Historically, each significant event is characterized by its own traditions. Some of them are observed from year to year, some are lost, and some come with time.
Earlier, the Independence Day of Ukraine was traditionally celebrated as a military parade on Khreshchatyk, but in 2011 the parade was canceled by Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. In 2012, the parade was also not and, according to the press, this year we also will not see it. These circumstances clearly indicate that one of the traditions of the celebration of the Independence Day of Ukraine is a thing of the past. Nevertheless, it can be noted that some traditions the Independence Day of Ukraine acquired only with time.
For example, the fair, held at Khreshchatyk, where people treat national dishes and sell kvass, beer and shish kebabs, was not the original tradition, but now it is difficult to imagine this holiday without it.
