During the tour of Mahdia you can see the local sights. Be sure to walk to the most interesting monument of Scyth el Kahl or the Dark Gate, as it is also called by the locals. It is worth to visit the main mosque, as well as the famous fortress Borj Mahdia. From it, we, perhaps, will begin. Before the construction of this structure, Roman troops built their fortifications there. Actually, on the ruins of the fortress and built Bordzh Mahdia. It began to be built in the 15th century, after a century this place successfully survived the onslaught of the Spaniards. Corsair Dragut even erected after the victory a terrible tower of the skulls of defeated enemies inside this building. But to this day, this terrible symbol of victory over the Spaniards, fortunately, has not survived.
The dark gate (Skif al-Kahla) was the entrance to the city. They are a rather long stone arch with very high arches. Previously, this building immediately gave the enemy to understand that the city is impregnable, and at the moment it was chosen by local small traders. Today everything here is full of inexpensive clothes and costume jewelery, and the air is saturated with the aroma of local spices.
Despite the fact that the main mosque of the city has uncomplicated architecture, this place attracts tourists very much. Unfortunately, at the moment only a copy of this majestic structure is accessible to the guests of the city. The original was destroyed during the war with Spain in the XVI century, and in 1965 the architects managed to build a similar mosque. For the construction of this temple used preserved old drawings.
