Triskele - the meaning of the symbol for the Slavs

In ancient times paganism was widespread and people worshiped the forces of nature. It was believed that the divine power had water, fire and air, and each element had its own unique symbol, but there are also prefabricated signs, for example, triskelion.

What is Triskel?

This is the most famous symbol used in ancient times and received its name from the Greek word, which translates as "three-legged". It was common in Europe, Asia, South America and the territory of the East. Triskele is a sign that celebrates the power of the sun (sunrise, zenith and sunset). Over time, the symbol was used to describe the strength of the three main elements: water, fire and air.

The image represents three curved lines that connect at one point in the center. They may look like feet, spirals and even the heads of animals. Through time, the triskele changed and appeared a huge number of forms, but they have one common pattern - between all the drawings there is symmetry. Among the interesting facts it is indicated that if you untwist the object on which the drawing is drawn, clockwise, you can see a repeating cycle of movements and often used it for hypnosis.

Celtic Triskel

The ancient symbol was especially popular with the Celts, who used it to create pagan spells. Triskelion is a powerful amulet of balance with nature that will help you to find tranquility, protection and energy of life. Symmetry in the amulet personifies independence from a change of circumstances and self-sufficiency. The drawing was applied to different objects not only to give them magical power, but also for beauty.

Norman version of this sign is slightly different from the primary Celtic pattern and it was called Triskale Odin. The symbol was received thanks to the Vikings. He represents the trinity in everything, from the great gods Odin , Torah and Loki and ending with the Spirit, the Soul and the Body. Finding out what triskelion means, it is worth pointing out that for the Celts it represented the cyclical nature of the universe, that is, the sunrise, zenith and sunset, on which life on earth depends.

Triskel - Buddhism

In this culture, the triskelion is depicted in the Dharma wheel and for Buddhists this symbol is of great importance. Represent it with a wheel that is on a small pedestal. It can have 5, 6 and 8 spokes. Triskelion is manifested in three parts of the wheel, which embody the aspects of Buddhist teachings:

  1. Hub. Represent Vinaya - the rules of ethics necessary for the stabilization and concentration of the mind.
  2. Spokes. Imitate the wisdom that erupts through ignorance.
  3. Rim. This is the meditative concentration of Buddhists.

The meaning of the symbol of Triskel in the Slavs

Similar symbols were used in the times of the ancient Slavs. In the north of Russia, triskel is represented by a broken line. Slavs use this symbol in order to find the right way into the life indicated by God. Three rays that has a triskel is an association to three running legs that are bent at the knees and show that the person is moving at a high speed.

In Slavs, this sign had to do with living and dead energy. He was used as an amulet against sudden death and various life problems. Another triskele is the unity of the three worlds (Rule, Jav and Nav). Describing the symbol, the Slavs often said that the center is the embodiment of the god Rod, and the rays are the divine Triglavs. In archaeological research the symbol is rare, which indicates its closeness.
