The Red Tower

Among the many fortifications and fortifications that Malta is so famous for, the Red Tower, located in Mellieha , stands apart. This is one of the most favorite places to visit with tourists coming to the island. The red tower of Malta can be considered one of the inalienable symbols of the state, reflecting its history and color.

A bit of history

The Red Tower (or the tower of St. Agatha) was built between 1647 and 1649 by architect Antonio Garcin. The building is a square building with four turrets. The outer walls have a thickness of about four meters.

The tower served as the main fortification and guard post in the west of Malta at the time of the knights. Then there was constantly a guard in the number of thirty people, and the storehouses of the tower were filled so that supplies of food and weapons were enough for 40 days in case of siege.

The tower continued to serve military purposes for many years, until the Second World War. It was used by radio intelligence services, and now it is the radar station of the armed forces of Malta.

State of the art tower

By the end of the 20th century, the Red Tower of Malta was not in the best condition - the building fell into decay. The building was partially destroyed and needed major repairs, which was done in 1999.

In 2001, the repair work was completely completed thanks to the financial support of patrons. As a result of the reconstruction, the exterior of the building has changed a little: the destroyed top turrets have been completely restored, the walls and roof have been rebuilt, the internal walls have been painted. The largest metamorphosis occurred with the floor: it was badly damaged, it was laid out with a special wooden covering with glass holes so that tourists could see old floor slabs through the glass.
