Ostrava National History Museum

The Ostrava Local History Museum is the main museum of the city, and therefore it is usually offered to visit all the tourists who come here for the first time. A visit to the museum will be especially interesting for those who are interested in Czech culture and history.

General information

Ostrava's Local History Museum was founded in 1872, becoming the first in the city. The founder was Karel Jaromir Bugovansky - a famous collector of the time, trying to carry art to the masses.

After the First World War, the museum collection was combined with two more - the industrial and the museum of industry. This is the basis of the exposure, which is currently available for viewing. Initially, the Museum of Local Lore was located in the old post office, but in 1931 it was moved to the old town hall in the center of Ostrava, on Masarykova Square. This building dates back to the 16th century and in itself represents a unique historical object.

Exposition of the museum

In the collection of the Ostrava Museum of Local History there are more than one million exhibits. All of them in one way or another relate to the history of the city and its development.

Among the exhibits there are both documents and various papers, as well as sculptures, historical costumes and jewelry. In the Museum of Local Lore you will have a really extensive view of the past of the city.

One of the most noteworthy things in the collection is a room clock-chime, a small copy of Orloi's watch hanging out on the Old Town Square in Prague . In length they reach 225 cm, and have as many as 50 different functions. Among other things, these room clocks have astrological and planetary calendars. And, of course, they show time.

The exposition is located in three halls under the town hall tower, which visitors can also climb to enjoy the beautiful panorama of Ostrava.

It is not necessary to ignore the Town Hall itself, which has a rich and very interesting history. It was built in 1539, but then the shape of the building was round. In the year 1830, lightning struck the town hall, and the structure suffered very badly. In 1875 it was reconstructed, the building acquired a Renaissance appearance. To this day it remains so.
