Synagogue

One of the oldest synagogues in the Western Hemisphere is the synagogue in Bridgetown . According to archival documents, it was erected by the Jewish community of Tzemach-David in 1654, but the devastating hurricane of 1831 almost destroyed the building, which was restored in 1833 thanks to the efforts of the Jewish community.

Architectural finds

The building of the synagogue is made in white and pink tones of stones of different breeds and occupies two floors. Reconstruction work carried out in the XIX century, decorated the facade of the building with Gothic arches and other small details that were not in the original performance of the synagogue. Recently, the Bridgetown synagogue is under the protection of the National Fund of Barbados , as one of the most unique buildings located on the territory of the state.

The synagogue in Bridgetown keeps unique Torah scrolls brought from Amsterdam. On its territory is organized a historical museum, which tells about the life of the Jewish community of Barbados from the moment of appearance of the first settler Jews to our days. In addition, the synagogue is a religious center for the Jews of the island state, many of whom are eager to hold the wedding ceremony within its walls.
