Shibori - master class

Shibori, or more correctly Sibori, is one of the most ancient techniques for staining fabrics from Japan . However, in due time this type of dyeing of textile linen was successfully used in ancient India, among Chinese masters and inhabitants of Africa.

Japanese shibori technique is a so-called nodular staining, which is carried out by sewing, winding or tying individual parts of a textile cloth in a certain way. Then, after applying the pigment, the fabric is untied and the colored and unpainted areas are woven into intricate ornaments. Drawing of the future pattern must be planned and worked out in advance in order to achieve the desired result. And in this article we will bring to your attention a master class on dyeing fabrics in shibori technique.

Necessary materials

Varieties of patterns that can be obtained on the fabric by staining, a great variety. To make a batik in the shibori technique with a graphic geometric ornament, you will need:

Instructions

In this master class, one of the variants of the Shibori technique, which is called Komasu, is considered:

  1. Flap the silk fabric folded in half.
  2. Prepare a square template. For its manufacture, you can use improvised materials. Perfectly suitable transparent plastic of an unnecessary box from under the compact disc. Using a marker, draw a diagonal auxiliary line on the template.
  3. Mark a pencil drawing on both sides, as shown in the figures.
  4. Using a needle, sew the fabric with a thread along the marked contour. The more stitches there are, the sharper the contours of the ornament. Conversely, if the distance between the stitches is large, then more paint will fall on the inner pattern and the borders of the pattern will be blurred. Do not cut or tie a thread.
  5. Tighten the sewn triangles by pulling on the thread.
  6. Wrap the resulting "ears" using the same end of the thread. From the frequency of the winding and from the size of the tip left untouched, the amount of the pigment that is attached to the interior of the ornament also depends.
  7. Now you can proceed directly to the process of staining. After the silk dries, carefully remove the threads. The fabric painted in shibori technique is ready!
