The history of the estate Arkhangelskoe originates under the reign of Ivan the Terrible, when in the 16th century it was called Ubolozye. During this time, its owners were such famous families as the Sheremetevs, Odoyevsky, Cherkasskys, Golitsyns and Yusupovs. It was Prince Nmkolay Golitsyn at the end of the 18th century that began the construction of an architectural and park ensemble designed by the French architect S. Herne. In 1810, the estate was bought by Prince Yusupov, who decided to place his art collection here, for which he continued the reconstruction of the palace and other buildings. The estate was completely completed only in the beginning of the 20th century, with the great granddaughter of Prince Yusupov - Zinaida Nikolaevna Yusupova.
During this time many famous people have visited here, including Emperor Alexander II, A. Pushkin, S. Sobolevsky, V. Serov, K. Korovin, K. Igumnov and other prominent cultural figures. Princess Zinaida Nikolaevna Yusupova bequeathed the estate Arkhangelskoye with collections to transfer to state ownership for the creation of the museum.
In 1919, the historical and art museum was opened in the Arkhangelskoye estate, which has now been given the status of a state museum. The main attractions of the museum-estate of Arkhangelsk are:
- architectural and park ensemble;
- a collection of paintings (about 500 units) - paintings of the most famous artists of Western Europe, 17-19 centuries (A. Ban Dyke, F. Bushe, D. Tiepolo, etc.);
- collection of arts and crafts (more than 4600 units) - includes artistic bronze, furniture, carriages, lamps, watches, as well as the largest collection of ceramics and a collection of sculptures;
- fund of rare books - the pride of the museum, has more than 16 thousand volumes, manuscript and published in the 16-19 centuries in Russia and Western Europe.
