Little Tobago

The island state of Trinidad and Tobago will delight tourists and tourists with a lot of attractions, among which the Little Tobago Reserve, located on the island of the same name near Tobago , the second largest island of the Republic of the Caribbean, stands out.

History of occurrence

The Little Tobago Reserve covers the whole territory of the island. More than 180 hectares are inhabited by many birds, and with the diversity of the island's fauna, no other region of the Caribbean can compete.

The reserve here was founded almost a hundred years ago, in the distant 1924. Now there are more than a hundred species of birds here, among which many are rare. For example, a dark tern or a Caribbean swallow.

You can meet here at the red ibises, but they do not live in the reserve all the time, but only visit the island. These birds are incredibly beautiful:

Was a haven of paradise birds

The island has many interesting legends. Among them is a real history associated with large paradise birds. It is said that, fifteen years before the founding, the reserve William Ingram decided to create a colony of large birds of paradise on the island of Little Tobago and brought 46 individuals from New Guinea.

The climate of the island was favorable for birds: they began to multiply rapidly. However, they lived there only until the early sixties of the last century, and the cause of the colony's death was a powerful hurricane.

Interestingly, it was the heirs and followers of Sir William who secured the founding of the Little Tobago Reserve - he did not live to see this event. But the birds of paradise brought to him on the island lived here for almost forty years.

How to get to the island?

Naturally, there is no direct air communication of our country with the reserve. Therefore, you need to get to the very republic of Trinidad and Tobago , and only then to get to Little Tobago.

The easiest way to get to the reserve is from Tobago - between the islands a little over two kilometers. Special boats run here, which have a transparent bottom - on the way tourists can enjoy the abundance of colored fish, fabulous reefs and other sea beauties.
