How does almonds grow?

Everyone knows about the benefits of almonds and its taste qualities. But how many almonds grow and whether it is possible to plant it in a cottage area, not many know. Growing almonds is a painstaking process, but you do not need any deep knowledge of agronomy or specific skills.

Where does almonds grow?

This plant is a tall shrub. He very well tolerates both extreme heat and frost. If your temperature does not fall below -25 ° C in your strip in winter, and spring frosts are rare, you can easily try to grow almonds in your area. Since the almond nut grows in the Crimea or the Caucasus and other southern territories of the former USSR, it is not considered an import.

An important point in growing almonds is the selection of land. Ideally, these are loamy soils, or even better clay soils. Consider the basic conditions for growing almonds.

  1. Disembarkation. You can start planting seedlings either in the first spring days or in late autumn. Planting will have up to six different varieties, since almonds grow only if cross-pollination (unless, of course, you want to harvest).
  2. Pollination occurs naturally. On the territory of your garden you need to place a hive from the calculation - one hive per hectare of land. Choose places that are well protected from winds and open in a southerly direction.
  3. Crown formation. When growing almond shrubs immediately after planting in early spring, the seedlings at the age of one year are shortened to about 80 cm high, and the crown shape is limited to 30 cm. If there are hardened shoots, leave up to five strongest ones and cut the rest. Thus, we form the crown up to five years. Further formation is reduced to thinning and removal of the dried branches.
  4. If you later decide to conduct vegetative reproduction of the almond tree, as rootstocks you can use both sweet and bitter varieties, and other trees: the plum, peach, and plum are suitable, but under the condition of inoculation at the age of two.

How to grow almonds from a stone?

The first thing that should be taken into account is the high probability of not preserving varietal qualities, commodity and biological. The place where almonds grow best is well drained and protected from cold winter and hot summer winds. If the summer is arid, the soil must be constantly moistened.

Preliminary it is necessary to dig out the planting sites, and plowing is allowed. You can sow in the period from November to December. The furrow should have a depth of about 10-15 cm.

If you plant in early spring, the seeds will have to stratify and alternate with sand a layer of 5 cm. At a temperature of 0-10 ° C, it is necessary to stratify the planting material in this way for up to 40 days.

Next, we observe the result: very sprouted roots can be pinched and thereby awaken the side roots. After sowing, wait until the seedlings have reached a height of 15 cm and then shovel the roots to a depth of 15 cm.

At the first stages of growing almond trees, it is important to maintain soil moisture and water the plants. As soon as the cortex lags well and the trunk diameter reaches 1 cm, the moment of budding comes.

If you plan to drop the nut directly to a permanent place, take two nuts per one meter of ground. If this is a temporary place, you can place up to six nuts on a square meter.

The next stage of growing almonds from the bone is budding:

Next, we take care of the trees, taking into account all the above rules.
