The God of Sleep Hypnos is the son of Darkness and Night. He is kind-hearted and benevolent, especially when compared with his twin brother, the god of death Thanatos. Hypnos was the favorite of the muses. Many myths are associated with this deity.

In Homer, this god lives on the island of Lemnos. According to another popular version, Hypnos lives in a cave in the Cimmerian land. It is always dark in it and there is absolute silence. In this cave the river of Oblivion originates. Near the entrance grow poppies and other plants that have a hypnotic effect. In the center of the cave there is a bed where Hypnos is resting, and around it are shapeless semitransparent creatures - dreams.

God Hypnos was portrayed as a naked young man with wings behind his back or on his temples. Sometimes he was added a small beard. Its main attribute is the sleeping wand. They touched people's eyes, which made them fall asleep. A symbol is a poppy or a horn with a poppy-like liquid. Every night, Hypnos flies above the ground and pours a soporific drink. God gives people pleasant dreams , which helps them to forget existing problems and misfortunes.

Hypnos has the power to put to sleep not only ordinary people and animals, but also gods. There is an interesting legend about this. One day, Hera asked the god of sleep to lull Zeus so that she could destroy Hercules. After Zeus woke up, he was angry and wanted to kill Hypnos, but for him stood the mother of Thread and he was forgiven. The most famous son of the god of Hypnos is Morpheus, who imitates people. He also had a son Fobetor, who turned into animals and birds, and Fantasy, appearing before people in the form of different inanimate objects.
