Spring is a wonderful time of the year when nature wakes up after a winter sleep. People tired of cold and frost wait for her arrival with impatience, wondering what she will be: early, or late, cold and rainy, or sunny and warm. People's signs of the onset of spring can tell a lot about the weather not only for this spring season, but also for the summer period.

Signs about the first day of spring

March 1 is associated in pagan beliefs with Maremyan-kikimoroy, the wife of a brown-haired man, who sometimes could be seen firsthand in a hen house or a passage. However, it differs from the house-type by a more abrupt temper and changeable character . Therefore, as a rule, on the day of her veneration, the weather is windy and frosty. But if the weather on this day was warm, then it meant a rapid sharp cooling. The abundant spring floods on this day promised a large number of rodents and insects in the summer, which will greatly spoil the harvest. If in the morning there is an impenetrable fog - the summer will be rainy and cool.

Pregnant women on this day at dawn were recommended to go out in the morning to the hillock and look at the sunrise, then the baby will be born healthy, and the birth itself will pass easily.

There was also a tradition to collect melt water on March 1, which had a healing power.

The first signs of spring

Many signs were associated not only with natural phenomena, but also with animals, birds and even insects. So to see the early spring white hare meant that the spring has not yet entered into its legal rights and the weather in the near future will be cold. A long moulting of the hares also spoke about not rapid warming.

Ducks that arrived from the winter huts thick predicted a cold and protracted spring.

The woodpecker, who began to knock loudly in March, also predicted a long spring.

Rooks, returning after the winter in their old nests, promised a warm and friendly spring.

If snow fell first on the ant hill from the north, then the summer will be warm and hot, and from the south - cold. According to the icicles in the spring, you can also determine what will be the grain yield. Long icicles, which were not hollow inside, spoke of a good and early harvest of spring crops.

Folk signs for some days of spring

The ancient Slavs, noting what kind of spring manifestations, made predictions about the forthcoming summer, and also adjusted the plan for sowing and horticulture.

March 14 is the day of Evdokia. If on this day there was warm weather, then the summer will be warm and early, and if it is cold, it will not make the summer happy either, it will be rainy.

March 25 - Grigory's Day. The fog on this day will be a good harvest of hemp and flax. On this day it is customary to feed grain and flax seed of birds.

April 18 was called in the people by the day of Fedul-Vetrogon. It was believed that from this day it is possible not to wait for severe frosts and strong cooling. And they said: "With Fedula, the warmth blew."
