Column of the Congress

The Colonna of Congress (Colonne du Congres) is on the square du Congrès in Brussels and is a kind of reminder of the day of the proclamation of the Constitution. By the way, the creation of this landmark of the architect Joseph Poulart (Joseph Poelaert) was inspired by the Trojan Column, located in Rome.

What's interestnig?

The upper part of the structure is decorated with a statue of the first Belgian monk, King Leopold I. It is surrounded by statues embodying the four freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution (Freedom of Union, Freedom of the Press, Freedom of Education and Freedom of Religion). And at the foot of the column is the grave of an unknown soldier.

It should be noted that this monument was created in the period from 2002 to 2008. And its total height is 48 m. Inside the column there is a spiral staircase, consisting of 193 steps. They lead to the platform on which there is a statue of Leopold I. The pedestal of the column engraved the names of members of the National Congress, as well as the Provisional Government. Here are cut important passages from the liberal Constitution of Belgium from 1832. In front of the monument there are two bronze lions, the project of which belongs to the Belgian sculptor Eugène Simonis (Eugène Simonis).

An interesting fact is that during the storm "Cyril" in 2007, the statue of "Press Freedom" was destroyed. Now it is completely restored.
