Keryonsan


Almost 70% of the territory of South Korea is covered with mountain massifs. But unlike its neighbors, China and Japan , the country is seismically stable. Here is concentrated a huge number of national parks and mountain peaks, one of which is Mount Kerençan.

General Information on Keryonzan

This mountain peak is eroded on the border of several cities at once - Keren, Gyeongju , Nonsan and Daejeon . Some areas of Keryonsan have military bases, others are part of the national park of the same name. In the local dialect, the name of the mountain is translated as "chicken dragon", since its top resembles a comb of a cock's head.

The mountain is interesting with its picturesque surroundings, as well as a diverse flora and fauna. According to zoologists, a lot of hedgehogs, snakes and striped squirrels live on the territory of Keryonsan. From large animals wild boars and deer are common here.

Temples

About 1.4 million tourists visit this mountain peak every year. This is due to the fact that for a long time the mountain of Kerençon was considered sacred. According to beliefs, a huge amount of qi energy is concentrated in it. That's why on its slopes were built such Buddhist temples as:

The temple of Sivons is notable for being built in 651 by a monk named Bodehovasang. The age of the Gapsa temple also totals at least two thousand years.

Here you can visit the male and female Buddhist temple , sit in the gazebo on the shore of a small river and gain strength for further ascension. By the way, the ascent to Keryonsan and other mountains in South Korea is a sport called tynsan. During the ascent, you can see how a wide dirt road gradually turns into a narrow, stone-lined path.

The tourist attraction of Kerençon

Buddhist buildings are not the only reason to visit Mount Kerençon. At its foot the national park with the same name is broken with a platform for camping. It is one of the twenty largest national parks in South Korea. Here grows 1112 species of plants, there are 1867 species of insects and 645 species of animals. The most interesting of them are:

Mount Kerençon and its surroundings are wrapped in mysterious legends and myths. Traveling to its summit gives an opportunity not only to get acquainted with all these secrets, but also to enjoy the beauty of the local nature. Only from here you can watch the spring cherry blossoms on the Dunhaksa mountain trail, in the autumn the neighborhoods of the temples are painted crimson and orange, and in winter snow falls under the snowdrifts of Mount Sambulong.

How to get to Kerjensan?

The mountain is located in the south-western part of South Korea about 140 km from Seoul . You can get to the national park by car or by sightseeing bus, and directly to Kerjansan only on foot. Near the reserve pass the roads Sedong-ro and Bomokgogae-ro, which connect it with the cities of Daejeon, Nonsan, Gyeongju.
