Cockpit-Country


This beautiful limestone plateau belongs to the number of nature reserves in Jamaica , it is very popular with tourists and deserves undoubted attention. Located Cockpit-Country in the center of western Jamaica.

Externally, the Cockpit-Country is a set of hillocks, hills and slopes, separated by valleys and ravines. For this natural basin, groundwater and karst funnels are characteristic.

This is the most spectacular and, in fact, the only option to evaluate this protected area in all its glory. Ground transportation to the plateau is not due to the lack of roads for it. There are hiking routes, but not all caves have access for visitors, many of them have never stepped footed lovers of nature and speleology.

In general, it should be noted that there are many caves in the limestone plateau of the Cockpit-Country. Among them there is "Windsor", the length of which is 1.6 km. At the same time in some places the cave expands and represents large and tall corridors and halls.

The tropical forests of Cockpit-Country are the habitat of many wild animals and endemic plants, therefore the plateau belongs to a number of protected and specially protected places. For example, in the forest you can meet giant predatory frogs, there are owls, boas, and in closed and unexplored caves there are bats.

How to visit?

To appreciate the beauty of Cockpit-Country, you must first fly to one of the two largest international airports in Jamaica - Montego Bay or Kingston . From Russia there are no direct flights to these cities, and with one transfer it is most convenient to use flights via Frankfurt, following to Montego Bay, or to Kinston via London. Then it's faster and more convenient to get to the place of destination by taxi. If you flew to Montego Bay, you can take the bus routes to the towns of Clarks Town and Windsor, which are located in the north of the Cockpit-Country Reserve.
