Caroni National Park


The national park, or the Caroni bird sanctuary, is located 13 km from the capital of Trinidad and Tobago, the city ​​of Port-of-Spain . The park is home to more than 150 species of birds, reptiles and about 30 species of fish live there, besides other animals. In the park there are excursions in the form of hiking or skating on a boat on the river. Some find similarities in such walks with trips to the Amazon.

What to see?

There are a lot of interesting birds in the park that surprise with their color and habits, in addition, some of them are listed in the Red Book. During walks, the guide always draws the attention of tourists to the scarlet ibis - the national bird of the island of Trinidad , it is he who is depicted on the arms of the country. Scarlet, or red, the ibis is completely painted in red - from the paws to the beak. It is very beautiful, especially when several individuals gather. The symbol of the island of Tobago is the red-tailed chalice, which is also full of crimson color.

Many areas of the reserve are covered with mangrove swamps, they are often flooded with water, so you should walk around the park neatly, exclusively along paved trails. Also in the reserve there are a lot of observation platforms, from which the habitats of certain species of birds are visible and very beautiful landscapes are opened.

Caroni National Park is located between the Churchill Roosevelt Highway and the Eria Butler Highway, south of Port-of-Spain . In the direction of the reserve does not go public transport, so you can visit the park only with the help of a sightseeing bus or taxi.
