Baptism of the Infant - rules

There are a number of strict rules for infant baptism, which parents should definitely take into account. They regulate the choice of the godparents, the faith of the parents and many of the little things that an untrained person will simply miss out of sight. To carry out the baptism of a newborn by all rules, it is worth giving enough attention to these issues.

The rules of baptism

The rules of baptism for a child's parents are reduced to how to choose a godfather, because it is not as simple as it seems at first glance. In addition, the Orthodox Church and to them make certain demands, without observance of which the sacrament of baptism will not be refused:

  1. The rules of the child's baptism in the church say: ideally, the child should be baptized in the first year of his life, or, at the latest, not later than reaching the age of 15 years.
  2. At least one of the parents must be a believing Orthodox Christian. Ideally, this means not only knowledge of basic dogmas and prayers, but also regular visits to confession and communion.
  3. The godparents can be no younger than 16 years (preferably not married to each other and not planning a marriage among themselves).
  4. The necessary minimum is one godfather: a receptor for the boy and a child for the girl.
  5. A godfather or a godfather must necessarily be people of faith, passing confession and communion. If on these sacraments the person was not for a long time, before baptism they should pass.
  6. If the godfather never communed at all, it can be admitted only on the condition that he does it on the eve of the event, and also confesses in his entire life.
  7. In some churches, the sacrament is loyal, but in some priests they first find out how much parents and godparents are familiar with the Orthodox faith - do they know prayers , are religious holidays, whether they know their history, whether they can give definitions to church terms. Therefore, it is worthwhile to prepare in advance, because if there is insufficient knowledge, you will be asked to read the four Gospels and attend special conversations.

These rules should be treated strictly: if even on the prospective day of the sacrament it turns out that potential godparents do not fit, then the sacrament can not be accomplished. If among all your acquaintances there is no one who could come up to the requirements, contact the church - you are recommended to one of the parishioners.
