Henry Allport founded this organization, in 1965, presenting the city with a truly priceless gift, bequeathed the collection of exhibits as the Allport family memorial. His ancestors arrived on the island in the XIX century, having played an important role in the cultural and social development of Hobart, and thus the donor wanted to pay tribute to the city and at the same time be assured of the integrity and preservation of the collection.
The museum enables every visitor to look into the lifestyle of an educated and intelligent family of the 19th century on the island of Tasmania. In his exposition you can see antique household items of the XVII century - furniture made of mahogany and walnut, Chinese and French porcelain, silverware, ceramic and glass products. In addition, from time to time here you can visit the exhibition of art works of the XIX century.
A special attention is deserved by a collection of rare books. They met with thoroughness, scrupulousness and persistence by Henry Allport himself.
