Who is Affandi?

The Indonesian artist Affandi Kusuma (ind., Affandi Koesoema) is one of the greatest creators of his country. He was widely recognized and known far beyond Indonesia . Affandi wrote in the style of expressionism, embodying independently studied techniques of European masters of painting and combining them with the Indonesian motifs of the theater of Vayang.

The future artist was born in 1907 in the city of Cirebon. In 1947 he headed the association "People's Artists", and five years later founded the Union of Artists of Indonesia. The peculiarity of the master's performance was that he painted pictures not with a brush, but with a tube of paint, which gives his works volume and helps express the author's special mood. The technique was discovered by accident, when the master could not find a pencil and drew a line on the canvas with a tube.

His unique style of Affandi was used for the first time in the film "The First Grandson" (Carrying the First Grandchild, 1953). This technique brought him popularity and helped to reveal inner feelings, to bring a zest to performing skills. This brought him fame and put it on a par with Van Gogh and some Impressionists, in which Affandi studied (Goya, Bosch, Botticelli, etc.).
