Abandoned missile base

The legacy of the Soviet Union to a greater or lesser extent can be found on the territory of the former republics that were part of it, Latvia is no exception. As in the capital of the state, and on its outskirts, it is possible to meet various objects of the Soviet era. It can be monuments, architectural objects and infrastructure, and there are also formidable military buildings, which are currently inoperative, but this did not cease to impress with the size, scope of construction and the alleged striking might. In Latvia, such objects can be attributed to an abandoned missile base in the vicinity of a large urban village of Kekava.

Abandoned missile base - history

Built in 1964, the missile base belonged to classified objects, which not all local residents knew about. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the launching station and the military town adjacent to it moved to the department of independent Latvia, which chose to stop servicing the military facility. Once a formidable structure with all the infrastructure quickly deteriorated, the mines were flooded, dangerous and radioactive elements were taken out. Now this place is an illustration to post-apocalyptic films, where tourists are willing to go on excursions.

Abandoned missile base, Riga - description

Kekava is located near Riga , the base is located in the wooded part, not far from the village, it is necessary to walk to the rocket shaft on foot. Local residents and private guides have thoroughly studied the approaches to this facility. Almost in the thickest part of the forest, a place was cut down where a military town with apartment buildings on several floors, barracks, household buildings, warehouses and garages was erected. Today, from all this, only the boxes of buildings with empty window apertures were left. Also in many rooms you can find agitational posters and inscriptions, inscribed directly on the walls.

Moving deeper into the forest, in a few minutes you can see directly the rocket launcher station itself. It represents four huge domes, equidistant from each other - these are mines, which are now half flooded. The depth of these mines is almost 40 m down. This object was designed to launch medium-range missiles of the Dvina type.

In the center of the station, a command deckhouse is located below the ground, from which several passes to the missile shafts lead. At the moment, many metal structures are cut and dismantled by marauders. Periodically, one or another rocket shaft is dried, which makes it easier to visit this place and marvel at the solidity and formidability of this structure. Being on this site, everyone should remember about the measures of personal safety.
