Zorn Museum


In the Swedish city ​​of Mura is a museum dedicated to the national painter and sculptor Anders Zorn (Zornsamlingarna or Zorn Museum). It is a complex of buildings on Lake Siljan , where visitors can get acquainted with the work of the famous master.

The Zorn house museum features a large number of artistic handicrafts and works of art that have been collected by the painter all his life. Anders traveled a lot to different countries, where he acquired unique exhibits for his collection. These were:

In 1886, the author bought a plot of land in the center of the city, after which he moved the old house of his ancestors to this place (he exists today). The building was expanded and attached to it new premises, the construction of which was led by Anders. Here, too, was an art workshop, where the painter worked.

Zorn was very keen to introduce visitors to the museum with folk crafts and art of different peoples of the world. He planned to build a special storage for his exhibits, but this dream was carried out by his wife Emma after the death of Anders in 1920.

Description of the museum

The widow in the organization of the museum was assisted by the scientist Gerda Boethius, who was the curator of the collection. The Zorn Museum was built in 1939. The original building was built in classical style, in 1982, stairs were added to it.

After 14 years, the workers built another building, located perpendicular to the main one. In the new room there was a study and a library. Around the garden was a large garden, decorated with Anders sculptural works and original flower beds.

Zorn supplemented his exposition with his own made artifacts. He influenced Impressionism in a virtuosic and free manner, for which he received awards. The latter can also be seen in the museum. For example, a gold medal (in 23 carats), cast in 1920, deserves attention. It has a diameter of 11.5 cm, weighs 1.33 kg.

Anders was one of the first among the Swedish figures to pay attention to the work of local masters. Products of Swedish peasants occupy a place of honor at the Museum of Zorn. Here you can see the works of such artists as Karl Larsson, Bruno Lilfors, etc.

Features of visit

On the 150th anniversary of the birth of Anders in his museum a major exhibition was opened, which is called "masterpieces of Zorn". This is the largest collection presented to the public over the past 15 years.

Every month about 15 thousand people visit the landmark . The Zorn Museum is open daily from 11:45 until 16:00.

How to get there?

From Stockholm to the city ​​of Mura, you can take the train (direction SJ Inter Cit) y, by car on the road number 69 and 70, or fly by plane. The distance is about 300 km. From the center of the village to the Zorn Museum you will walk along the streets of Hantverkaregatan, Vasagatan and Millåkersgatan. The journey takes up to 10 minutes.
