The Museum of Galdiano

It is said that the inhabitants of each city have their own favorite attraction and pride. When it comes to the inhabitants of Madrid, the subject of their pride is the Galdiano Museum (Galdiano) - a gift to the city from a fellow countryman.

The building of the museum is previously a private four-story mansion by Jose Lazaro Galdiano, who together with his wife in the 20s of the last century were fond of collecting rare and valuable art objects of the 15-19 centuries.

Before his death, he wrote a will on his house and the whole collection of values in favor of the inhabitants of Madrid. A little later, a special fund for the publisher was created to manage the affairs of the museum and its preservation. The entire collection has about 12,600 items and about twenty thousand old books and manuscripts. In mid-January 1951 the museum was visited by the first visitors. And let it not be as popular as some other museums in Madrid , for example, the Golden Triangle of Arts ( the Prado Museum , Queen Sofia's Art Center , Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum ) or the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando , but still one of the most visited.

The picture gallery occupies a special place in the museum, because its pearl is the little-known drawings, sketches and engravings by Francisco Goya (one of the artist's most important works is the dome of the church painted by him, later named in his honor - Goya's Pantheon ), as well as his scandalous painting "Mach ". The museum also holds some masterpieces of such authors as El Greco, Velasquez, Murillo and even the brushwork of the English school, which is rare for the Spanish museums: John Constable, Joshua Reynolds and many other portrait painters. The exhibition of the Galdiano Museum offers jewelry, beautiful goblets, sculptures, knights' armor and a collection of weapons of the Middle Ages, church utensils, watches and coins, ancient ivory and enamel items.

The building is divided into 20 exhibition rooms, 4 offices and 2 halls of a huge library, all the rooms are divided into thematic areas and epochs of creating collections. For the Great Goya, there is a separate room. The offices are separate rooms with exhibits rare for museums in Madrid:

The Galdiano Museum also arranges temporary exhibitions with unique exhibits from the Old and New Worlds.
