The Mariinsky Palace: history
Another name for this magnificent building is the Imperial Palace. The fact is that it was built by the order of Empress Elizabeth, the daughter of Peter the Great, who specially arrived in Kiev in 1744 and personally chose the place to build a future palace in which the royal family could be visiting the city. A monumental structure was erected for five years (from 1750 to 1755) according to the design of the famous court architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli, created for Count Rozumovsky. The construction of the Mariinsky Palace in Kiev was occupied by the Russian architect I. Michurin with a team of students and assistants.
The history of the significant architectural masterpiece includes a large number of reconstructions that were conducted for the arrival of the highest figures, government officials, members of the royal family. One of the most significant restructuring took place in 1870, which was started because of a severe fire that destroyed the wooden second floor, as well as the main rooms. In 1874, Mr .. wife of Tsar Alexander II, Maria Alexandrovna, after a visit to the Ukrainian capital, it was proposed to lay a park near the palace. Subsequently, the Royal Palace and renamed the Mariinsky.
The palace was the residence of the royal family in Kiev until the October Revolution. Then the Bolsheviks placed in it a council of deputies, a revolutionary committee, later a museum of TG. Shevchenko and even an agricultural museum.
The second cardinal reconstruction was carried out immediately after the end of the Great Patriotic War (from 1945 to 1949), as the bomb fell on the palace. A new restoration of the building was already in 1979-1982. taking into account the project of the architect of the Mariinsky Palace - B. Rastrelli. Since the proclamation of the independence of Ukraine (1991), the construction began to be used as the residence of the President.
Mariinsky Palace: architecture
The Mariinsky Palace is recognized as the pearl of the architecture of the Ukrainian capital. Complex construction has a strict symmetrical composition. The main building was built by two floors (the first stone, the second wooden), and together with one-story side wings it forms a wide courtyard. The Mariinsky Palace was designed in the Baroque style, which was reflected in the chic furnishings of the facades, symmetrical composition and precise planning, the use of a filigree parapet and stucco moldings of the windows of the building. Typical for the architectural style are the colors in which the structure was made: the walls are painted in turquoise, the cornices and columns - in sand colors, and for small decorative elements a white color is applied. The premises of the Mariinsky Palace are decorated with parquet from the best woods, decorated with silk, numerous mirrors, luxurious furniture and chandeliers, paintings by famous artists and wall paintings.
