The first signs of meningitis

Despite the difference in causes, the first signs of meningitis of almost any type develop in the same way. An exception is the pathology caused by a tubercle bacillus. In this case, the disease proceeds slowly, while the remaining forms are characterized by rapid, and sometimes lightning, progression.

The first signs of meningitis in an adult

  1. A febrile condition is one of the first signs of pathology. The temperature can reach a mark of 40 degrees. At the initial stage it is easy to knock down the febrifuge, but then they just stop functioning.
  2. A strong headache persists man persistently, sharply intensified when turning the head, as well as in bright light and loud sounds.
  3. It is not surprising that the patient, trying to ease his position, often hides under the blanket, protecting his eyes from too bright light.
  4. Since in the occipital region with meningitis muscles tend to strain, a person often takes a characteristic posture. He tilts his head back, and his knees tightens to his stomach.
  5. Inflammation of the membranes leads to an increase in the volume of fluid in the brain, so the blood pressure rises sharply and the dropsy is diagnosed.
  6. The condition worsens by the presence of bouts of nausea, leading to indomitable vomiting. In this case, the patient does not feel the slightest relief from vomiting.
  7. For some types of meningitis, the presence of skin rashes is noted among the first symptoms. In this case, it can last for several days or disappear within 1-2 hours.
  8. When the cranial nerves are affected, strabismus appears.

As the pathology progresses, the following symptoms are noted:

  1. Confusion of consciousness. The patient can be delirious, often there are hallucinations.
  2. There is a hearing and vision impairment.
  3. There is soreness in the muscle tissues, gradually the body of the patient reduces convulsions.

As a rule, such a state precedes a coma and means that all measures taken have not had a positive effect.

To ensure the recovery of the patient with meningitis, even at the first signs of the disease you need to seek professional help. With this form of pathology, like reactive meningitis, the count goes literally on the clock and procrastination can lead to a fatal outcome. Complicated forms of inflammation of the meninges often cause disability.
